The high concentration of powerful mutants in one place was making David sick and confining him to a be while hundreds of voices yelled and spoke in his head.

Melanie sat next to him explaining that David's "symptoms" of schizophrenia were actually his mutant powers, specifically telepathy.

She taught David how to use his telepathy allowing him to finally gain some peace from the voices.

The next day Melanie brought him to see Ptonomy to begin memory work. Ptonomy is a memory artist which allows him and whoever he chooses to go back through a person's memories.

Using this ability Melanie, David and Ptonomy are able to look back through David's life and see that every instance of mental illness was just his powers and also gain a better understanding of what triggers them.

Ptonomy takes David back to his childhood. They explore his memories of planting with his mother and star gazing with his father.

David reveals that Mr. Haller died the year before and Clockworks wouldn't release him to attend the funeral.

However things begin to go south as they observe Mr. Haller reading young David a bedtime story. David is unable to see Mr.

Haller's face and instead listens to the horrify bedtime story called The World's Angriest Boy in the World , a picture book about a boy who beheads his mother for trying to send him to bed.

The room begins to shake and David panics waking up from the memory in a hysterical state. To calm him, Ptonomy puts him to sleep. David then wakes up in another room of Summerland with Ptonomy sitting nearby.

Ptonomy comforts him by saying the first time was always the hardest and offering him some milk. Ptonomy then says that he needs to do talk work with Melanie to figure out what it all means and that Melanie thinks David is the key to winning the war.

Ptonomy also presses for more information about The World's Angriest Boy in the World but David is reluctant to talk about it and the subject drops.

David then confides in Syd that he doesn't believe the memory work is helping. Syd tells him it will and to give it time. She then confides in him about what it was like in his body and apologizes for killing Lenny.

David expresses his desire to have physical contact with her however Sydney says that the closer she gets to someone the more uncomfortable it is.

David accepts this. Melanie, Ptonomy, and David continue with the memory work. They watch a memory of David attending a session with Dr.

Poole where David re-accounts why Philly finally ended their relationship while leaving out key details. During the conversation there is a glitch.

Next they look at a memory of Lenny who should have been Benny but David's memory was altered so all instances of Benny were replaced with Lenny and David selling a kitchen range to the Greek for drugs.

They then get high in his apartment and when David looks over at Lenny he instead sees the Devil with the Yellow Eyes. Ptonomy pauses the memory and Melanie asks David about what he sees.

David is reluctant to say excusing it as what you see when you're high or a symptom of schizophrenia, however, Melanie refuses to believe this.

Ptonomy changes the subject to the glitch in the previous memory and asks David what occurred there. Melanie tells him it's important that he remembers and shows them everything.

David protests that he's trying to remember everything and not inhibiting his therapy. He even suggests that he was distracted but Ptonomy retorts that even if David was distracted the surrounding memory would have been intact.

Melanie reassures David that they'll find the truth together before having Ptonomy fix the glitch. In the completed scene the trio to sees a brief image of David in a kitchen with millions of objects floating around him.

Ptonomy asks David if he saw the image but David says he didn't see anything. Ptonomy asks David to concentrate and try but David only apologizes and says he doesn't know.

Melanie reassures David and Ptonomy asks him to make his mind blank in order to get them to the memory. However Ptonomy isn't able to bring the group to the kitchen scene but back to David's childhood bedroom.

Ptonomy is unsure of why this happened and tries to bring the group back to the kichen but is unable to change the memory.

Ptonomy, becoming increasingly frustrated, says David's too strong. David continues to say it isn't him and Melanie replies by saying that he needs to trust them.

The door then slams as the room begins the shake violently causing The World's Angriest Boy in the World book to fall off the shelf and David to become terrified again.

Later Sydney and David talk. Sydney says Melanie wouldn't tell her what happened during memory work and David brushes it off as kid stuff.

Syd expresses her concern that David isn't happy at Summerland but David reassures her it is as long as they're safe. He then reads Syd's thoughts that she'd protect him if they weren't.

Later, in an attempt to discover where David's memories are stored Cary Loudermilk places him into an MRI machine, while at the same time conversing with Kerry, who David was not aware of at the time.

Before starting, Cary stated that David had an extremely large amygdala, and that he should think about someone he loves. During the scan David hears a woman calling his name but Cary and Kerry say that no one was calling his name.

David realizes it's his sister he can hear and it isn't a memory. David then watches as Amy attempts to ask a Clockwork employee for her brother however the employee replies that David Haller was never a patient there nor was Dr.

Kissinger a doctor at Clockworks. David sees Walter and Division 3 coming up behind his sister and calls out to her right before she's taken.

Back in the lab during this experience, David's brain lights up due to neural activity. Cary asks what happened as he had never seen anything like this before.

David tells him he heard his sister and Cary tells David not to move and exits the room in a hurry. As his fear builds to a climax he is suddenly laying on the floor of the lab the MRI machine nowhere in sight.

As it turns out, he teleported it outside. David prepared to leave the others and rescue Amy, but Syd persuades him to stay and further develop his powers through the memory work.

David is concerned that Division 3 kill his sister but Sydney assures him they won't, because she is the bait. David tells Dr.

Bird about his sister, who decides that memory work had to be accelerated, to do this they would focus on the big events. Ptonomy, Melanie, and David further explored the memory of the day he destroyed his kitchen.

Melanie explained that David was not only a telepath, but also had telekinesis as evidenced by the flying kitchen utensils. The next step was to find what triggered David into using his powers.

David takes the group to when Philly walked in on David using drugs. Melanie points out it was only when David felt trapped did his powers kick in.

David begins to feel uncomfortable but Melanie encourages him to continue. However when Ptonomy tries to continue the memory he is unable to.

At this same moment the Devil with the Yellow Eyes appear which terrifies David. Neither Ptonomy nor Melanie can see the Devil but they do see the kitchen door violently slam.

They then ask David what happened but he doesn't remember. Ptonomy attempts to play the memory again but something resists him before the trio is brought out of his memory and into reality.

Not only were they out of David's memory but they had teleported ft through two solid walls and back into the main building of Summerland. After the failed memory work, David takes some time to himself and sits on a dock.

Sydney soon joins him and they begin sharing facts about their childhoods as well as what it was like during the body swap. Sydney also explains how she's come to accept that her power allows anyone into her body.

Later, Dr. Loudermilk hooked David up to a few electrodes in an attempt to model his brainwaves and take hormone readings.

He asks David to think of something stressful, and David relived a boyhood Halloween, when all of sudden, the scene changed dramatically: his dog, King, ran away and he wandered into a somber field, where he came face to face with the title character of The World's Angriest Boy in the World.

After a while Cary asks David through the intercom if everything is okay however David does not respond but the speech center of his brain is active.

As Lenny, Farouk, taunts David that Division 3 could be "gang banging" his sister while he's in therapy and also warns him of trusting Melanie.

The Shadow King's words upset David and trigger his powers. David then causes the glass to crack, and a malfunction to occur.

They watch Amy being terrorized by Division 3, with Brubaker telling her about her brother's powers and tried to coerce Amy into helping them find David and "turn him off".

Suddenly, Walter notices them and reaches for the spectral David and Syd. Fortunately, the pair vanished and materialize in the middle of the lake.

The two tell Melanie, Cary, and Ptonomy what they had seen. Melanie recognized the agent - his name was Walter , a former ally of Melanie's husband Oliver when Summerland was founded.

David demands that they rescue his sister but Melanie explains that he could not go back to Division 3 for risk of exposing himself or all of them.

She tells David that his brain seems to be defending itself, refusing to allow them access to certain memories. Melanie also expresses her concern that the memory work is only making things worse.

She elaborates that she isn't giving up on David though because he's too important and she wants to fix him because he deserves to be healthy and happy and then she wants to use him to win the war.

To combat the resistance they're facing, Melanie suggests that David is sedated temporarily so she could have unfiltered access to his mind to get a better understanding of his powers.

Syd declares that she's going into his memories too. Melanie and David both object to this. David tells her that he's worried about what may happen to Sydney in his memories.

However Syd tells him that she'll be fine as it was her who rescued him from a pool surrounded by agents with guns. David tells her that it's part of his therapy and so he needs to do this alone.

The night before the sedation Sydney finds David in the bathroom, hiding. David elaborates that he was not a good person before they met. He lied. He stole.

He was high all the time. David was worried that after seeing his past, Sydney would no longer love him. Syd says that she loves him, and because of that there was nothing else to say.

The following morning Syd, Ptonomy, and Melanie all enter David's mind. The sedation kept David's rational mind from entering the memory landscape, and so he manifested as a young boy.

Since Syd's powers did not work outside the physical world, David and Syd were able to embrace for the first time. As they progress through the memory the group finds themselves watching David rob Dr.

However soon things turn for the worse. First Sydney notices the room shaking as though caused by heavy footsteps.

Next she sees flashes of David eating recording tape. Syd points both of these things out to Ptonomy and Melanie but neither notice these things.

Finally a red crack appears in one of the office's walls and long-fingered hands attempt to claw their way out. This understandably unsettles Syd and demands that they have to go.

Ptonomy and Melanie are not aware of what is occurring but agree to Sydeney's pleas. But when Ptonomy attempts to exit the memory he finds he can't.

Child David then runs out of the room and is followed by Sydney who calls after them. The run through different memories of David becoming high and even of David having sex with Philly.

Eventually, they find themselves in David's childhood bedroom. Sydney asks child David where he hides where no one can find him and leads her into the hallway of his childhood home.

While child David begins opening up a vent, Sydney notices that The Angry Boy is in the hallway as well. Quickly the duo climb into the vent and hide but the Demon with the Yellow Eyes is right behind them.

Syd urges David to wake up, and Syd is returned to reality. She then wakes up Ptonomy and shortly after Melanie joins them but David remains under—trapped within his own mind.

With David not waking up, Cary performs several tests on his body to try and determine what occurred.

There was no medical reason for David's coma and he was not brain dead as his mind was active. Ptonomy searched his memory and his subconscious but could not find David's mind.

Realizing that part of David's power was being able to create a mental projection space somewhere between reality and dream they concluded that he was trapped in the astral plane.

In the Astral Plane, David gains consciousness and sees a figure dressed in a diving suit. The figure motions for David to follow them and leads him to a large floating ice cube.

The Ice cube is exquisitely decorated in a modernist style. As David takes in his new surroundings, the figure disrobes revealing himself to be Oliver Bird , the husband of Melanie Bird.

However, Oliver has been in the astral plane a long time and his memory eludes him. In the ice cube Oliver tells David that he is trapped in the Astral plane, a "no-place, where every day is the same, where you can imagine yourself a kingdom but nothing is ever real.

He alludes to the fact that Farouk makes David forget but David protests that there is no monster and it's just his psychology. David also states that he needs to leave and save his sister.

Reluctantly, Oliver lets him return to the Astral Plane outside the ice cube telling David that the monster is not a metaphor and more like a parasite.

David then begins to wander the subconscious land of the Astral Plane searching for a way out. As he wanders Farouk, disguised as Lenny, appears as well as the rest of his childhood bedroom.

David is not in the mood to play "Lenny's" games and attempts to leave the illusion bedroom only to find himself walking right back into it every time.

David tries to defend them, saying Oliver told him it wasn't their fault before asking who "Lenny" really is. I'm me. I'm everything you want to be.

To motivate David and activate his powers she shows him an image of what is occurring in the real world, where Sydney, Ptonomy, and Kerry are all unconscious in the back of a van driven by Walter to Division 3.

What David does not realize is that Sydney and Walter have body-swapped and that Syd, in Walter's body, is actually driving the mutants to safety.

This does the trick and David activates his powers. Between David and Farouk's combined powers they reenter the real world, stop the truck, and release Syd's body which is being controlled by Walter and gives her a knife.

The real Syd wakes up in time to stop Walter from killing David before attempting to chase her and stop her.

David, not realizing the body swap, tackles Walter's body to the ground as the two swap bodies back. Now with his own body Walter shoots Kerry in the shoulder before escaping.

The group brings Kerry back to Summerland where Cary treats her. David then speaks with Melanie telling her that he met Oliver.

David also speaks with Syd who attempts to tell him what she, Ptonomy, and Cary discovered about his past however David does not want to know.

Instead he shows her that he's learned to control his power placing their minds into an illusion of a beautiful white-walled room by a beach.

At first Sydney doesn't understand and becomes fearful when David touches her. But David explains that it's okay and this is a way for them to be together.

He created this illusion and they can touch without actually touching and causing a body swap. The two then spend time together in the room naming it the White Room.

After Kerry becomes stable David and Syd meet with Melanie where David tells her that he's going to get Amy in the morning. Melanie reiterates how this is a bad idea but David has made up his mind to go and if Melanie doesn't want to help, she doesn't have to.

Syd declares that she'll be going to rescue Amy too. Melanie continues to protest but David changes the topic to her husband. He tells her Oliver looks good and lives in an ice cube.

Melanie reveals that he's been trapped in the astral plane for 21 years but before that he was like David, having psychic powers. He discovered the Astral Plane and spent more and more time in there until one day he didn't return.

Melanie then asks David to bring him home. In the elevator after the meeting David and Syd talk about going to Division 3, saying it'll be fun.

Syd then asks David if they can return to the White Room, which they do. After having sex David asks if it was Syd's first time.

Sydney reveals that her first time was with her mother's boyfriend when she was She swapped bodies with her mother and they switched back while he was still inside her right has her mom walked in.

Lenny convinces him to go to Division 3 alone as with their combined powers they could easily take on the organization with everyone else just getting in the way.

David agrees saying that once they have Amy they'll return to Summerland. Sydney wakes up and hears the two conversing and enters the bathroom only to find it empty.

David travels to Division 3 and destroys the base, phasing soldiers into the ground and walls. He even appears to be enjoying himself while barely breaking a sweat.

However, it is not David who is in control as Farouk has completely taken over David's body. Kissinger tells him that Amy is in the interrogation room and David says he'll free Dennis.

But David neither frees him nor kills him. David then rescues his sister, killing everyone including Brubaker with the exception of Dr. During the travel the real David reaches out to Syd who had finished exploring the destroyed Division 3 with Melanie, Rudy, and Ptonomy.

Sydney, now in the White Room with red light spilling through the windows, asks David if he's okay. David, unable to scream, shushes her before singing "Rainbow Connection" on a ukulele.

During the song David gestures to the bathroom which is filled with red light, King the dog and The Angry Boy. Syd closes the door and David then gestures towards a telescope.

When Sydney looks through it she sees his childhood house before coming back to reality. Amy expresses her gratitude towards David for saving her before asking why the came to the house.

She tells him that Division 3 alluded to the Summerland mutants David was working with and their base of operations.

Amy asks what he would like to talk about and David says her secret. Farouk then takes on David's form once again and begs Amy to tell her the secret.

Amy, disoriented, tells David he was adopted. She explains that she doesn't know who his real father is and Mr. Haller were going to tell him but he became sick and upset and they feared making things worse.

Professor X reluctantly agreed and Legion was able to use his various powers to fight Nimrod Sentinels alongside the other X-Men.

Not long afterwards, Doctor Nemesis began killing off Legion's sub-personalities, seemingly without any negative effects.

Despite restoring reality once again, several of David's personas escaped in corporeal bodies. With a small team of X-Men, Legion began to hunt down and reabsorb all of these rogue persona, but while capturing the last one he accidentally absorbed Rogue.

Upon releasing her, he suffered a massive shock to his nervous system. David recovered from his catatonic state at some point and was seen on the shores of Ibiza , Spain together with his father.

He suffered intense pain - just as many other psychics did - as the Phoenix arrived to choose its host. After waking up, Professor Xavier sent Legion away to a commune for spiritualists in the Himalayas.

Studying under a guru, Merzah the Mystic , David gained a far greater level of control over his powers and split personalities.

At one point David expressed the suspicion and anger he felt towards his father for abandoning him, but was told by Merzah that "Professor X doesn't fail the people he loves" and while David thought about that, one of his sub-persona managed to take control for a short time before being subdued by Merzah.

Later David expressed his need for a goal to focus on and Merzah showed him the protester who opposed the members of the commune.

With the help of Merzah, David used his powers to give the protester two choices: either peacefully accept them as equals or continue hating and fearing them, which would result in conflict.

David was surprised to see that the protester chose to bow down and worship him, although the mutant sent him home. Afterwards, David was asked by Merzah what he would do if the protester took the second choice but before he answered the young mutant was hit by a mental shock wave from his father's death and lost control of his powers, accidentally destroying the commune.

All his evil imprisoned personalities were freed and a new personality emerged, killing another personality so it would have less competition. One by one, the evil personalities took control of David's body and started to wreak havoc wherever they went.

David took the chance to hide, restoring control over his body. During a peaceful moment, David was attacked by the People's Liberation Equality-Ops and discovered from an unseen entity that he was in China.

The entity used the remains of a dead goat to build itself a body to help David with. One of the splinter personalities, calling itself Tyrannix the Abominoid , got inside David's mind.

David used his passion to defeat Tyrannix, drained him of his power and used it to knock out the P.

Reading the stranger's mind, he discovered it full of hate for him, his father and mutants in general. He also learned of imprisoned mutant twins and decided to help them.

After returning Tyrannix to his cell, David tells him that the gift of telepathy, which that splinter personality controlled, is his, and from now on, he will take it from him whenever he chooses.

Four days later, David arrived in Japan to seek out the twins. Following a faint psychic trace he is lead to a trap -- an astral projection in the form of a giant raven that knocks him out.

Once awake, David find out that the twins, Karasu-Tengu and Sojobo-Tengu are not captives but the heirs of one of Logan's enemies, Ogun , a yakuza leader that was told Legion would come to destroy their clan.

David watched as the twins were forced to rip out the soul of someone who insulted their father. Then the twins were given orders find who sent David and then kill him.

While the twins do their work, David used his powers to protect himself from their telepathic probe and asked them if they like what they do.

The twins admitted that they found it revolting. David and the twins talked about loyalty and respect for their elders, and the young mutant explained how he was seeking to uphold his father's legacy and dream.

Meanwhile, in his mind, David tried to find a persona to defeat his captors. David tried to convince the twins that they are too young for the life of crime and violence and regardless of the debt they owed their adopted father this was not a life fit for children.

The twins asked what alternative his father would offer. This reminded David of the danger room and the fact his father used to put children in it.

David was confused at the start but then he told them that just because their father had done two things right, doesn't mean he was infallible, doesn't mean they have to do things the same way and it all right to try and be different and better.

His conversation with the twins strengthened his appreciation for Xavier, his dream, and David's part in it.

Now more confident and mentally stronger, David overcame one of the four personas he failed to drain earlier and used its power to free himself.

He thanked the twins and explains that they should have childhood and a choice, that genes do not decide their way of life and nobody should be forced to fight if they do not want to.

David asked the twins to accompany him in his journey and they accepted. However, when the X-Men arrive soon after, they believed that David was going to hurt the children and ask Legion to turn the twins over to them.

David was not happy with being called by his code name, and believed that the X-Men put the mutant twins in danger, a matter that he felt was proven by the fact that they teach children how to fight.

His disagreement over their methods lead David to plot against the X-Men. Beginning by putting Wolverine's mind on "stand by," David fought the X-Men with the help of the twins, almost defeating them until Blindfold stepped in.

The girl introduced herself to David as his nemesis and used her telepathy to cut him off from his powers. A new persona angrily attacked Ruth telling her to get out.

David and the twins then hid in an ammo hut but Chamber pursued and destroyed the structure. Empowered by the belief that the twins needed him, David defeated another sub-persona and used its power to protect them but apparently perished while doing so.

He was, in fact, alive and watched as the X-Men gathered the twins. David also noticed the pair of eyes that belonged to one of the twins.

For a week, David tried to contact his mother but was uncertain what to say to her. Later he used his powers to locate and teleport Dire Wraiths to the front door of the Jean Grey School so he could infiltrate the building and find Blindfold to learn what attacked her in his mind.

David also discovered her origin and upon reaching her, he was pulled away Karasu, who revealed that her brother was acting strange.

After reading a message she gives him, David comes to realize that the "Eyeball Guy" was in fact Blindfold's murderous brother, Luca.

Worse, he killed Sojobo and possessed his corpse to infiltrate the school so that he could murder his sister. With newfound determination, David teleported away to save Ruth.

He chased Luca throughout the school, but the murderer was prepared for him. Karasu, not knowing that her brother was really dead, thought that David was trying to hurt him and attempted to aid Luca.

David was angered when Luca considered killing Karasu. A new persona taunted him over his anger, claiming that his father would be ashamed of him, which caused David to lose his confidence and allowed the persona to briefly take control.

David "awoke" to find the X-Men in front of him about to attack, but Blindfold attacked Luca first, forcing him to flee.

Wolverine offered Legion a place to stay so they could help him, but David still disagreed over the X-Men's policy towards training children and turned Logan down.

While leaving, David encountered Karasu who expressed her hatred for him over what happened to her brother. When David reached the gate, he saw Ruth waiting for him and asked her what made her wake up, to which she answered that he called and warned her not to go deep in the darkness.

While wondering what is it that he should be careful from, the new persona told him that the grand evil that Luca foresaw, the one that will wipe out mutantkind was none other than David himself and Blindfold was destined to kill him to stop it.

David asked him how he came to know all of this and "Fiend" answered that he knows everything, revealing himself to be in the form of Charles Xavier and calls David "my son" which horrified David greatly.

David lives up to his word to make the world a better place by locating and framing the group that corrupted Luca by bringing the Dire Wraiths to earth to be arrested by S.

While on a date with Ruth, David took her to the moon and told her about the new persona inside his mind and that all the other personalities are terrified of it.

He also told her when it helped him, he saw a glimpse of the future and from that vision, he knows that Aarkus, after reading a book, will start killing all mutants, and they can stop him before he does that, by making sure that he doesn't wake up.

Ruth disagreed, saying that they can't do this to someone who didn't do anything yet. David tells her that he will not become reactive like his father and reveals to her that he already made sure Aarkus won't wake up five hours ago.

She tells him that she knows that he needed her approval to gain enough strength and self-belief to drain a persona in order to gain the power he needed.

Ruth was disappointed and asked David to send her home. David tried to justify what he did, but Blindfold asked again to be returned home.

David sent her and Aarkus back and told her to tell the X-Men to do what they can do to help him and told Ruth that he thought he loved her. After that, David started to read the book Luca wrote about the vision he saw about the future.

To avoid killing Blindfold and cause many other deaths, David wiped himself out of existence, but in fact remained within Ruth Aldine 's mind.

After his resurrection, a personality of David's by the name Lord Trauma tried to take over his mind while David was taken into hospital after being found by an Amish couple.

David manages to temporarily defeat Lord Trauma and heads to see Dr. Hannah Jones, a psychotherapist known for mainly working with celebrities.

As David is heading in her direction, Lord Trauma seeks her out and warns her not to treat David and trying to scare her through visual hallucinations.

The two had an affair that, after an amicable end and unbeknownst to Xavier, ultimately resulted in the birth of their son David Gabrielle had not told Xavier she was pregnant.

David, at a young age, was living with his mother and stepfather in Paris when his home was attacked by terrorists and his stepfather killed.

The trauma of the situation caused an initial manifestation of David's mutant powers, as David incinerated the minds of the terrorists. In the process, he unintentionally absorbed the mind of the terrorist leader, Jemail Karami, into his own.

Being linked to so many others at their time of death, David was rendered catatonic for years. As he slowly recovered, he was moved to the care of Moira MacTaggert at the Muir Island mutant research facility.

The trauma possibly in conjunction with the nature of his reality-altering powers had caused David's psyche to splinter into multiple personalities, each personality manifesting different mutant abilities.

The Karami personality, which manifested telepathic abilities, struggled for years to separate his consciousness from David's. In the process, Karami reintegrated many of the splintered personalities back into David's core personality thus ending David's catatonia.

Some of the personalities resisted Karami, most notably Jack Wayne, a swaggering adventurer who was telekinetic , and Cyndi, a temperamental, rebellious girl who was pyrokinetic.

Ultimately Karami, Wayne, and Cyndi continued to exist as David's most prominent alternate personalities. During his time at Muir Island, David saved Moira and Wolfsbane from a fatal accident by accessing the telekinetic abilities of his Jack Wayne personality.

However, this allowed Jack Wayne to take control of David's body, and he left the island. The New Mutants tracked him down and, after a struggle, convinced Wayne to allow David to again assume control.

Years later, David awoke from his coma believing his psyche fully healed. When he had killed the mutant precog Destiny, David had absorbed her psyche.

Destiny gave David vague prophetic guidance about the great world that could exist "if only, years ago, Professor X had been given a real chance to fulfill his dream.

As several X-Men attempted to stop him, Legion traveled twenty years into the past, accidentally dragging the X-Men with him. David appeared in the past in front of Xavier and Magneto, who at the time were orderlies in a mental hospital.

As Legion attacked Magneto, the X-Men intervened. After overpowering the X-Men, Legion readied his fatal blow for Magneto, but Xavier leaped in front of the lethal psychic attack and was himself killed.

By accidentally killing his father, the horrified David prevented his own birth and ceased to exist. The death of Xavier created a catastrophic alternate timeline, the Age of Apocalypse.

Ultimately, Bishop managed to fix the timeline by enlisting the aid of the new reality's X-Men to travel back in time to the moment of Xavier's murder.

There Bishop confronted Legion, using David's own power to create a psionic loop that showed the young mutant the damage that his actions would cause.

David allowed the energy released in this process to incinerate him, in his last moments apologizing for what he had done. While David was considered deceased, some of his alternate personalities manifested as spirits and started terrorizing Israel where David had been born.

Excalibur was called to stop them. Ultimately Meggan used her empathy to calm their rage, convincing them to go "towards the light. David had in fact not died; rather, his mind manifested in Otherplace, a timeless interdimensional limbo.

When Bishop had turned Legion's psychic power back on him, it devastated David's mental landscape, undoing all the healing efforts of Karami and Professor Xavier.

David now had thousands of personalities vying for control in his mind. David wandered through Otherplace for an untold period of time, trying to make his way back home.

David re-manifested in the physical world, although his core David personality had been imprisoned in his mindscape by his other personalities, allowing the more malicious personalities to take turns controlling his body.

One of these personalities killed and absorbed the mind of a young girl, Marci Sobol, who became another personality within Legion.

David was discovered by the New Mutants as they investigated a possible mutant case in Westcliffe, Colorado. As the rest of the team fought a losing battle against various personalities that seized control of Legion's body, in his mindscape Karma and Magik destroyed other hostile personalities.

Eventually they found the Marci personality, who led them to David's imprisoned core self. By freeing David and helping him reassert control, Karma and Magik saved the rest of the team and were restored to their bodies.

Weeks later, Magik managed to bring the Elder Gods back to Earth, planning to have her revenge on them.

The Elder Gods manifested, causing catastrophic destruction, and appeared ready to lay waste to the world. As the various mutant teams tried to stop this apocalypse, Magik sent her ally Karma to free Legion and awaken "The Legion" personality to fulfill its bargain.

The Legion, who Magik called "The God Mutant," appeared and altered reality to wipe the Elder Gods from existence and reset the world to a time before they had manifested.

Believing that David's psyche would be healed if his alternate personalities were quarantined, Doctor Nemesis began to catalog and contain these personalities within David's mind.

Unbeknownst to Doctor Nemesis and Professor Xavier, however, David's mind subconsciously perceived this intervention as a threat and created a "psychic antibody," a powerful new personality, to defend itself.

The new personality had access to a degree of David's underlying ability to alter reality and time. Assuming the appearance of the deceased Moira McTaggert considered a mother figure by David due to his time under her care at Muir Island , the personality attempted to 'protect' Legion from the 'assault' on his mind by creating a pocket reality where Legion was the hero that he always wanted to be.

The alternate pocket reality, the Age of X , was a dystopia in which mutants had been hunted almost to extinction; the remaining mutants were kept alive by Legion's mutant team, who daily generated a force wall to repel attacking human forces.

Legion himself remained unaware that one of his personalities had created this world, and most of the mutants who had been brought into the reality by 'Moira' believed that they had always been there.

Within this pocket reality the 'Moira' personality was practically omnipotent, creating and controlling random soldiers for Legion and the other mutants to kill.

Eventually, Legacy, the alternate Rogue , discovered that 'Moira' had in fact created this reality. Confronted with this truth, Legion spoke to 'Moira,' who tearfully offered to create as many universes for him as he wanted.

Instead, David absorbed 'Moira' back into himself and erased the Age of X reality, restoring its participants to Earth reality; ultimately, this entire timeline had lasted seven days in their normal continuity.

With the Age of X incident underscoring the potentially apocalyptic scope of David's power, Professor X proposed a new approach to help Legion retain control of himself.

Instead of isolating David from the other personalities in his mind, Professor X suggested that he learn to co-exist with them.

This switchboard assigned unique numbers to different Legion personalities. When David entered a number, the device stimulated cells in his thalamus and neocortex, creating a one-way link between David's core personality and the alternate personality he had selected.

This allowed Legion to access the power of that personality for several seconds without being overwhelmed by it.

Who is Legion? - History of Legion (David Haller)

Around this time the Summerland team enters the house only to find that there is no sound. As the team explores the house they are tormented by Farouk.

Sydney manages to find Amy in the bedroom. However Amy is sitting comatose-like and staring at a mirror. Syd tries to wake her until "Lenny appears", chokes her before throwing her against the wall where David sat also in a comatose state.

While Sydney watches, "Lenny" begins to molest with David's body. Melanie, Ptonomy, Kerry, and Cary then walk in.

Sydney finds herself and David Farouk still in control presumably standing and facing them. Walter, disguised as Rudy, then bursts into the room and begins firing a machine gun at David.

Syd protects David by hugging David, placing her body between him and the bullets, and telling David to put them in the White Room.

Farouk, as the Devil with the Yellow Eyes, then enters the room and stalks Sydney as she tries to run all the while screaming for David to help her.

The Devil with the Yellow Eyes then pins Sydney to the bed causing David to step in and use his abilities to stop time in the real world, and place everyone's minds into an alternate reality.

Lenny Busker the Shadow King is their therapist. Events from the original Clockworks repeat themselves however they are slightly altered. For instance Rudy becomes the drooling man at the beginning of Chapter 1 and who also can be seen in the WTF promo while David and Ptonomy, who takes the place of Lenny, watch.

While David and Ptonomy discuss how there is no going back to a normal life after the mental illness starts, Sydney comes up to them. She asks if they had noticed a bedroom door in one of the halls but before she can elaborate Dr.

Busker arrives to take David to his session. In the session with Dr. Busker, David expresses his content with the life in the hospital.

He feels he's found a rhythm and Syd and him have gotten close. In this reality David also has bipolar disorder and Dr. Busker asks if he's still afraid of losing the control he's found here but David says that this is no longer the case as it seems real.

David absorbed MacTaggart and Wolfsbane's consciousnesses, or their astral selves, into his mind. Xavier's attempted to probe David's mind, bringing Mirage's astral self with him for assistance.

David's mind then absorbed the astral selves of Cypher and Gabrielle Haller, and those of Xavier and Mirage followed them.

It was just before Xavier actually entered David's mind that he learned that David was his son and that the multiple personalities called themselves Legion after the Biblical quotation Mark , "My name is Legion for we are many".

All of the consciousnesses that Legion had just "captured" retained their independent existences within David's mind.

The new arrivals found themselves teaming up with Wayne and Cyndi against Karami, having been deceived by Wayne as to Karami's true motives. However, Mirage prevented Wayne from destroying Karami, who told her and Gabrielle Haller how he had been trying to help David.

Working with the reluctant Wayne, Mirage and Karami completed the task of restoring David's mind to near-normalcy, and Mirage and Karami returned the consciousnesses absorbed from outside including Mirage's own back to their own bodies.

Since Karami's body was long dead, his psyche remained within David's mind. However, Karami was unable to integrate the Wayne and Cyndi personalities into David's core persona, and so they remained separate personalities within David's mind.

Wayne and Cyndi sometimes spoke to people in the real world through David, as could Karami, whose consciousness also remained an independent entity within David's mind.

However, David himself was no longer autistic, and his normal, core personality was in control of his mind and body.

David's dominant personality was still that of a ten-year-old boy, just as it was before he suffered the trauma. Apparently the conflict within David's mind among his splinter personalities affected his physiognomy, accounting for his unusual appearance.

Perhaps one of his personalities controlled shapeshifting powers. It is not known whether or not David would have been more normal in appearance if his normal personality had retained control of his body.

Some time later, an accident happened that would have killed Wolfsbane and Moira if David hadn't used his telekinetic power to save them.

However, by doing this David allowed Jack to take control over his body and escape to Scotland to indulge himself.

The New Mutants tracked him down and fought him. Jack forced Cyndi to help him. Cyndi didn't like being "anyone's puppet," but she didn't want to be locked up for only wanting to live.

Sunspot had Magik take him and Legion into Limbo, warning Jack that unless he relinquished control, Magik would remove him from Legion's mind and obliterate him; in response, Jack retreated into David's subconscious, allowing David to resume control.

Months later, Muir Island was attacked by Donald Pierce and his Reavers during their ongoing campaign against Wolverine and his friends.

David was in the nursery playing with Sunder and the Warpies, who were taken in when the island became a safe haven for the lost souls.

Again, David reached out with his telekinetic powers, hoping to defend his friends from harm, but once more allowed Jack Wayne to reach the surface of his mind.

Now in control, Wayne thought it would be cute to reshape the telekinetic shield to protect only him, leaving Sunder vulnerable to the gunfire.

Jack and Cyndi ran wild during the attack, doing as they pleased without any thought of the consequences, even after Freedom Force arrived to help fend off the Reavers.

Legion, while under the control of the Shadow King , also assaulted the elderly precog, Destiny, who had sensed him in advance and sent her protector Forge away so that he would not suffer the same fate.

Panicking, Legion struck out with a telepathic blast and killed Destiny before she could show him anymore. Jack acted like David Haller in the presence of others, and so he allowed himself to be used by Forge in an experiment to locate the missing X-Men with a Cerebro unit.

Unfortunately, they made telepathic contact with something else, the Shadow King. Legion tried to use his power to reabsorb Proteus 's energy from Piecemeal.

Unfortunately, the depth of Piecemeal's pain telepathically bled through Legion's mind, causing him to drop his telekinetic fields.

X-Factor, who had made a failed attempt to stop Proteus and reclaim Edinburgh, were also banished. Tragically, the gathering of heroes were forced to convince Proteus he could never find the same happiness in life that he found in death so Proteus chose to die again.

The X-Men, who had just returned from space with Professor X, attempted to infiltrate the island but were quickly discovered.

Legion personally confronted Storm. The Shadow King used David's body to torment Prof. X, mocking him while he thought that he was corrupting David.

The Shadow King revealed that he'd merely given David self-control by healing his fractured mind, and that David enjoyed it. David's physical body was hurt by Storm and needed time to heal so the Shadow King retreated.

When the Shadow King was finally defeated and pushed from David's mind, David was left in a vegetative state.

X didn't want to lose his son so he desperately searched for any trace of consciousness inside David's mind. Unable to locate any signs of activity, he reluctantly accepted that David was gone.

David was consigned to an intensive care ward at a hospital in Tel Aviv, his body receiving the best of care in the hopes that his mind might someday return.

Many months later, David awakened with his mind completely healed after visions of Destiny urged him on towards his true destiny.

However, David's attempts failed when Xavier refused to accept that Magneto's death would help realize his dream.

Hearing this, David revealed himself and told his father he disagreed. Mystique fled, promising to return, and was pursued by X-Factor.

Shortly afterwards, Gabrielle Haller was shocked and overjoyed when David called her mother, thinking that her son was finally whole again.

David fainted again and in his mind made a tombstone for his splinter personality while having another vision of Destiny.

When he awakened he seemed incoherent, and when his mother brought Forge to help him, he was gone. When David found Mystique battling Forge and Wolfsbane he stopped them so he could deliver Destiny's message to Mystique.

He then teleported X-Factor away, saying they needed to be somewhere else. When Mystique questioned David, he said he would fix everything and "make it all better" before flying away.

David flew to Negev Desert where he had another vision of Destiny. In it she claimed it was his destiny to heal the rift between humans and mutants thus making the world as his father had always wanted.

Believing the visions, he started to construct a "psychic bunker". Gabrielle Haller contacted the X-Men for help. Failing to enter David's "bunker," the X-Men's Blackbird was caught in a telekinetic field.

David claimed to be happy to see his "step-siblings," thinking they were there to support him. Legion told the heroes to say what they wanted, but to watch their tone as he was no longer insane.

Jean Grey tried to convince him that he was still not fully healed, but David disagreed. The young mutant insisted that he was whole at last and that he would complete his father's work.

When Storm questioned him again, David pulled her through a time portal, arriving at the moment her parents perished.

David told her she could save them which she tried to do, only to be wrenched back to the future.

Storm claimed that what she saw was an illusion, but David insisted it was real time travel and that she simply was not fast enough to save her family.

Realizing what Legion was trying to do, Storm asked Psylocke to link her mind with Bishop who had just tried to absorb Legion's energy and a moment later the mutants were dragged to the past with David.

An alternate future dubbed the " Age of Apocalypse " was created when Legion went back in time to kill Magneto before he could oppose Xavier's dream, but instead inadvertently killed Xavier himself.

The energy released by this event was so intense that David apparently died. Since Bishop had prevented Legion from killing Xavier, the normal timeline was restored.

After Bishop 's attack, Legion disappeared into somewhere called the "no-time. Eventually David was able to bring himself back to Earth near Westcliffe, Colorado.

Here David met Marci Sabol. She helped David, gave him water and played games with him. Unfortunately, one of Legion's murderous personalities emerged, killed the girl and absorbed her psyche into Legion's mind.

After embarking on a mission to investigate a report of mutant activity in Colorado, Danielle Moonstar and Karma went missing.

Karma attempted to reach out psychically for Marci and ended up trapped in Legion's mind. Meanwhile, Moonstar was arrested. Cannonball and Sunspot found Karma's unconscious body in a backroom at a bar.

Meanwhile, Magik and Magma found Karma's mind inhabiting Legion's body inside a metal box kept in the cellar of a private residence.

While the rest of the team was battling Legion's body and numerous evil personas, Magik entered Legion's mind and killed Jack Wayne with her Soulsword.

While testing the device, Legion discovered that six of his personalities were no longer in his mind, but had "escaped," manifesting separately from him in the real world.

While absorbing the last one, he accidentally absorbed Rogue along with it, and, after releasing her, David suffered a massive shock to his nervous system.

Rogue stated that, while she was inside Legion, she was connected to thousands of types of powers and there were more being born all the time.

To aid his recovery, Professor X left Legion with Merzah the Mystic, a powerful empath and telepath who ran a Himalayan monastery.

While at the monastery, David gained much greater control of himself, and he stopped using the Neural Switchboard Wristband.

Under Merzah's tutelage, David learned to visualize a facility in his mind where his alternate personalities could be kept and controlled. When Legion sensed this, the mental shock caused a catastrophic release of energy that killed Merzah and everyone else at the monastery.

This personality was able to kill other personalities in his mind, absorbing their powers in the process. In the final issue of X-Men: Legacy , Legion, reaching the full extent of his powers, decided to erase himself from existence.

For unknown reasons perhaps elements of his own psyche working against him , Legion's attempt to erase himself from existence failed.
